HEAT ADVISORY: STAY SAFE & STAY COOL

The Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District reminds everyone to take the heat seriously. During a Heat Advisory, the best place to be is indoors in a cool, air-conditioned location.

STAY INSIDE WHEN POSSIBLE
Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day. If you do need to go outside, limit your time in the heat and take frequent breaks in a cool or air-conditioned place.

KEEP YOUR BODY COOL
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeinated beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
• Take cool showers or baths.
• Use fans, but remember that fans may not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures are extremely high.
• Close blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day to keep your home cooler.
• If your home is too warm, spend time in an air-conditioned location such as a library, shopping center, community center, or other public cooling location.

CHECK ON THOSE MOST AT RISK
Check on older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and anyone who may have difficulty staying cool. Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle—even for a short time.

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS
Heat exhaustion may include:
• Heavy sweating
• Cold, pale, or clammy skin
• Muscle cramps
• Headache
• Nausea
• Dizziness or weakness

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Signs may include:
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Loss of consciousness
• Seizure
• Very hot skin
• A body temperature of 103°F or higher

If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Move the person to a cooler location and begin cooling them while waiting for emergency responders.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.
